The Jesuit Library at Milltown
Since the Schools of Philosophy and Theology were established at Milltown Park in the 1880's the Irish Jesuits have gathered publications for their house of studies. Since 1938 this material has been housed in an attractive purpose-built library, the Jesuit Library.
The Jesuit Library, which is one of the finest theology libraries in Ireland, is at the disposal of the staff and students of the Milltown Institute. The Library contains 135,000 volumes covering theology, philosophy, spirituality, scripture, Church history, Jesuit history and biography, the humanities and Irish affairs.
All library holdings have been added to the computerised catalogue. There is access to the catalogue through four terminals located in the library. You can also search the catalogue from home at:

Library Use
Students of the college are helped to make best use of the library through the library tour given to each class at the beginning of the academic year, and through one-to-one guidance given on demand throughout the year. A user leaflet is available.
Students are encouraged to become independent learners through instruction from library staff on use of the library catalogue, reference works, periodicals and the Internet. The computer catalogues are user-friendly. There are three on the ground floor and one on the first floor. There are two photocopiers in the library area. Students purchase photocopying cards from a card dispenser in the library area.
Borrowing
Registered students of Milltown Institute may borrow books. Undergraduates may borrow 4 books; post-graduates may borrow 8 books. Students may renew books, in person or by phone, unless another student has reserved them. Users may reserve books that are currently out to other users. Graduates of Milltown Institute may, at the discretion of the Librarian and for an annual fee, avail of library services.
Research
A letter of introduction is provided, on request, for postgraduate students and staff wishing to consult material in other libraries. Inter Library Loans can be obtained for staff and postgraduate students.
Since November 2006 the library has subscribed to the ATLA database, an online theological research resource.
External Readers
Researchers from other institutions of higher education are welcome to visit the Library to consult material in the collection. A letter of introduction is required from the visitor’s own Library. Please contact the Librarian by email: jeslib@eircom.net or by phone at +353 1 2180285 to arrange a visit.
Study
The library provides an environment conducive to quiet study. The Reference Room contains a superb range of reference material and is a very pleasant study area. The Reading Room, open for longer hours than the main library, houses those books which are on course reading lists. This means that core texts are available to all students for the length of each semester.
